Digital Changeover
Starting in 2008 and ending in 2012, TV services in the UK will go completely digital, TV region by TV region. This process is called digital switchover. The UK’s old television broadcast signal (known as “analogue”) is being switched off and replaced with a “digital” signal. Any TV set or video recorder that’s not converted to digital when the switchover takes place will no longer receive TV programmes. If you currently receive just the traditional five UK channels (BBC One, BBC Two, ITV, Channel 4 and Five) – or only some of them – on any of your TV sets, you’ll need to think about your options for getting digital TV. Every TV set you want to keep watching in your home will need to be converted or upgraded to digital. How does it work? With digital TV, sound and pictures from the broadcaster are converted into ‘bits’ of information and sent through an aerial, satellite, telephone line or cable. This digital signal is then turned back into pictures and sound by a digital box or a digital TV set. What are the benefits of digital TV? Compared to traditional TV, it brings many new ways to enjoy your TV:
- Extra TV channels as standard
You’ll receive all your usual TV channels and many more as standard including BBC Three, ITV2, E4, More 4, S4C2, Sky News, Cbeebies, CBBC, CITV, ITV3 and FilmFour* (*from July 2006).
Digital TV can improve the quality of your TV picture & sound.
Including on-screen TV listings, true widescreen picture and red-button interactivity.
Terrestrial digital, ( Freeview ) is available in most areas via a TV aerial, and a Freeview set top box. No subscription is needed and about 30+ Tv channels are available, as well as interactive services.
Making the choice for your new aerial is very important when considering the digital changeover is coming soon.
If you live in a Freeview area, then you should be all set with your existing aerial. But great TV deserves great reception, so older aerials or those that have taken a beating through weather will need some attention. You may need a new rooftop aerial or better quality aerial cable.
RF Digital Aerials can also supply Freeview boxes and our trained engineers can install at the same time as installing the Aerial. Some TVs are now available with built in Freeview tuners.
If you would like to discuss your requirements or are not sure which is the best option for you, please contact us, and we will be happy to advise you
Please do not leave this to the last minute. When you may think that 2012 seems to be a long way ahead, take into account that there may not be enough aerial engineer’s or equipment to cope on demand nearer to time also you may be at risk of rogue traders.
Act now for a smooth transition to avoid the wait and paying premium prices. We look forward to hearing from you!
